Ruby is one of the four precious along with diamond, sapphire, and emerald.  The name is derived from the Latin word "ruber" meaning red.  Ruby is also the third hardest gemstone.  Recrystallization is a lab technique for purifying solids to separate a high-value crystalline product from unwanted impurities.  It is the process in which an initially solidified crystalline material is redissolved and crystallized again to produce the final product of the desired size, shape, purity, and yield.
